Heading for the Southland!

Day 1 of Snowbird Adventures

Getting ready for Southbound trip
Getting ready for Southbound trip

We left early on Sunday morning, January 27th, it was time for us to be heading for the Southland, becoming Snowbirds at last, heading for Florida.  We have stops planned for the KoA Nashville – East  (Lebanon, TN) and KoA in Ozark, AL).  Leaving early on a Sunday morning, certainly made the driving much easier going straight through Cincinnati as opposed to the I-275 around the city and much shorter too! Thayer Chevrolet Dealer – Bowling Green, OH

While our truck was already in for service at Thayer, we decided to ask for an in-depth checkout of all of the engine, cooling and drivetrain components.  The technician is a Duramax diesel owner and fellow RV’er, so he knows the engine and the lifestyle.  He found the probable cause of the failure of the turbocharging system!  When the new parts were installed on the engine, he connected up his electronics and took the truck out for a test drive before calling us to pick it up.  The tests quickly indicated that the air/fuel ratio was not correct, not even close.  So he brought the truck back in and found a fairly large crack in the back/underside of the “Airbox”, and that has its own air filter, the crack was after the filtering thus allowing more air in then should be.  It is unclear when the crack occurred, but it was definitely broken and has to be repaired.

Not a fun day on I-75

On Friday the 27th we were coming back from our week-long camping trip at East Harbor State Park which is on Lake Erie. It was a sunny day and we were enjoying the ride back through the countryside. When we finally got to I-75 at Bowling Green the engine started making a funny (as in peculiar, not haha) noise. Just as we were turning on to on the on-ramp the engine made a very loud hissing sound, 2 seconds later, the engine light came on and the onboard computer reduced the power to about 15% and to keep from hurting the engine components.  Luckily for us, there was a rest stop within 200 yards of the on-ramp and we made it there safely.

Searching for our first Snowbird place

Snowbird at Topics RV, Spring Hill, Fl

After a lot of discussion last late May/June, we decided to “try” being a classic “Snowbird” in 2018.  We drove down to St. Pete and stayed at the local KoA.  The park was OK, but not as nice as others we have visited.  We used that place as a hub to spoke-out from there looking for potential longer-term stay locations.  We looked all around St. Pete, Tampa and Bradenton areas that we thought might be decent choices, since we didn’t have any great information on sites.  Continue reading “Searching for our first Snowbird place”
